Homemade Vegan Poppyseed Dressing

(source)
One of my favorite dressings to use on salads is a Poppy Seed Dressing. Just like Brianna's Home Style Poppyseed dressing. But...to save some $$ and make sure I know everything going in to it I prefer homemade dressings. I have one I use specifically for a spinach salad at holidays and special occasions, but...it has a lot of sugar in it. And I could eat it everyday... Check out this healthier option! And yes, this uses maple syrup instead of sugar!!!

Vegan Poppyseed Dressing
makes about 1 cup (so you will have leftovers)

2 Tbsp Vegan mayo
2 tsp spicy Dijon mustard
1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp agave or maple syrup
1 tsp shallots, finely chopped
1 Tbsp poppy seeds
1/2 tsp garlic powder
dash pepper

Directions for dressing:

Whisk all ingredients very well. I usually blend my dressings to get a creamier texture, but for this, add the poppy seeds after you blend so they don't get broken down.

Food Is Not Your Enemy

Biggest thing to learn and really believe is that you don’t have to be perfect with your diet or exercise to lose weight. If you are eating healthy and clean MOST of the time, you will lose weight. It might not be as fast of a weight loss but, it will be a more lasting weight loss. This is where living the 80/20 rule comes in. Eat clean 80% of the time. Following the approved foods to a T but one meal a week you allow yourself to indulge more than you would. Maybe having a slice of cake, or pasta dinner with Alfredo sauce.

Weight loss comes from the kitchen with the help of exercise to assist with fat burning in your body.

Ask yourself: Last time you were on a diet how did you feel when you “cheated” on the diet?

This is why diets do not work. Because you feel like you are cheating when you eat something that isn't allowed. With the 80/20 lifestyle there is no cheating. 80% of the time you eat clean and healthy. 20% of the time you allow yourself a GUILT FREE treat or meal and still be able to reach your results. Wouldn’t that be nice to never cheat again? Make sure to plan out in your weekly meal plan your indulgent treat to look forward to it!

How to make 80/20 work in your life:

PLAN OUT YOUR MEALS AHEAD OF TIME
Take time every week to plan your meals and even your indulgent meal. Put it on a calendar. Write that meal in big letters, or color so you can see, "on Thursday night I get to have PIZZA!" Do you think seeing that know that you have it planned will help you stay on track?

Use that as your motivation to say "NO" to treats or temptations during the week. You have your meals planned. No need to indulge.

LEARN TO BE FLEXIBLE!

Life happens. There might be a last minute work lunch that you have to go to. Or your kids after school activity went way later than expected. If you already have all your meals planned out for the week, you can just swap things around. Indulge tonight, but stick tonights dinner where you were planning on indulging.

PREP YOUR FOOD

Pre cook most of your food so that it is already ready to go so that you don't have to work that hard to make clean eating happen. Biggest reason why we eat out is because it is fast! But if you already have your chicken pre-cook, you just have to heat it up and GO! Fast and healthier than eating out at McD for the 3rd time this week!

READ THE GODDESS REVOLUTION! If you want to change how you think about food, your body and reclaim your life, check out this amazing, empowering book to help you do just that. I'm halfway through it. It's an easy read you guys. But it is helping to strengthen my mindset to get my butt in gear!

15 Years Married- Tips on how to make marriage work!

Yesterday the hubs and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary! I can't believe it honestly. And most people don't believe us since we have such young kids. They assume that we have only been married for 7, 8 years max! But nope, since it took us 8 years to finally get pregnant. And we did get married pretty young but that is neither here nor there, because here we are, 15 years in, married and still in love with each other.
In a way it feels like we are defying all the odds. So many of our friend's marriages haven't made it. It breaks our hearts when we hear of another couple that separate. So I wanted to share some advice on how we have made it work these past 15 years
1) No marriage is perfect
Nope, not even ours. We have had ups and downs, good and bad times but we never gave up on each other. There are many reasons why things get tough: financial problems, infertility, lack of feeling needed or wanted, loss of identity. Our fertility struggles almost broke us to be honest. But, what can help keep a couple strong is communication. You must talk to each other, and talk often. Talk about money, don't let just one person handle the finances. Go over you budgets. Comfort each other through infertility. Hold each other. Be honest and real with each other. Talk about your goals, wishes and your struggles. Work through them together. But talk! And talk often!
2) Don't ever stop dating your spouse
Just because you are married doesn't mean that the romancing or dating stops. No, you are still in a budding relationship which is ever changing. Your relationship and feelings need to keep growing just as you age together. Make it a goal to go on a date as often as you can. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE TOGETHER! Even if that means grabbing a cone at McDonalds. Strive for a weekly date which is ideal, or can't do weekly do a monthly. Don't go too long between dates. We have been using Mason's karate school's Parents Night Out for our monthly date, because we can't go weekly, but before we had kids, we were going on weekly dates. And hold hands and TALK during your date. But not about the kids. About each other.

3) Always say "I love you" to each other as much as possible
I can't say, "always say you love each other before you go to bed," because, we haven't done that. We have had our fights just like anyone else, where Matt slept in the other room, or during his deployments where we had restricted communication. But what I can say is that we have said that we love each other almost every day. Even with the fights or arguments. Anytime we talk I try to remind Matt that I love him. Because I do. We fell in love for a reason and we are staying in love. And we mean it. Make it count. Give your spouse a big nice kiss and tell them that you love them, as much as you can.
4) Show your affection often
I'm not just talking about sex, which is another point, but make sure you show your affection in front of your kids. Hold hands, kiss, sit next to each other and cuddle. Let your kids see what a loving relationship looks like. Matt tells me all the time how he remembers his grandpa lovingly pat his grandmas butt in front of him. Or I remember saying "ewwww" when my parents would kiss in front of me. Now my kids are starting to do that too to us, but they always have a smile on their face because behind the "grossed out" mask they wear, the are happy to see us so happy. Hold hands, cross legs, or snuggle as much as you can. Just like you did when you were dating, cause...remember, you are still dating!

5) Have sex, often
Yes, I said it. Because it is necessary. Break the standardized "married people only have sex once a month" stigma. Because it isn't true. It's up to you and your hubs how often you do have intimacy, but the more you do the more your are reaffirming your affection for each other. Building that mental bond between each other. Again, you fell in love for a reason, this is your way to show it!
6) Family comes first
Remember your family, meaning, your husband you and kids, you all come first. Your happiness and love as a family. It all comes first over various activities that happen in your life. Make it a point to have dinner together every day. To talk about your day. Having good wholesome fun, like going for walks, playing in the backyard, going to the park. We are all too connected to our devices. Our goal is no tablets or phones or toys at the dinner table. We put them down, and leave them to rest while we have our time together. Even if that means that our oldest will sit and scowl at us because he is refusing to eat dinner again, he is still required to sit with us at the table and scowl while the rest of us talk. Dinner time is important to us. If you can do anything, leave your dinner time sacred, as a time that you have together and other activities don't cross with. Even me, I have rehearsals on Tuesday nights after I teach. I still try to spend a little time with the family before I have to leave, if I can. But a good 6 out of 7 days, we are all around the table at the same time, talking and enjoying each other.

7) One more thing...
Remember, you guys came first before you had kids and you guys will be together long after the kids have gone. Keeping the line of communication open, dating often, being intimate will help bridge the gap from when it was just the 2 of you to when it is just the 2 of you again. My parents have been married for 41 years. They are a huge a huge inspiration to me with raising kids, and now watching them as have been empty nesters for awhile, and semi-retired, and what they are doing by seeing the world  makes me excited for the days when we are retired and can see the world too! You want to have that loving relationship with your spouse when the kids are gone. And the way to make that work is to work at it while the kids are still home. Never give up on your love for each other. Remember you married each other for a reason.

Your Body Is A Reflection Of Your Lifestyle

I often go scrolling, looking for inspirational quotes to use for my groups. And while I was scrolling, I saw this one, "your body is a reflection of your lifestyle."It seems kind of harsh, or brash but the more I thought of it, the more I agreed.

The past year and a half is the first time I have ever made it a point to get my eyebrows waxed regularly, hair cut and colored regularly, and this year I added stop biting my nails and get them done regularly. Before this point, I had never really thought "I deserved it." I never thought, "I can do this for me. I'm worth it to do it." And often though that Only special people pamper themselves often.

That is not true. Too many times we put ourselves on the back burner for other people, or family. Especially moms. We put our kids first. But let me tell you you do deserve to be taken care of. Because just like in an airplane you have to take care of yourself first before you can help others.

And taking the context of this picture to the health and wellness side of it. It is also true. The less active we are and the more high calorie, fatty, greasy, sugary, fast and cheap foods we eat, the more the body will gain. This is personally what led me to gain my weight. Crap food and no exercise.

Keep in mind right now though, I exercise often, but where I lack in my control and 100% commitment or even sometimes 80% commitment, is my eating. This is why my body is strong but it is still holding onto some fat. I know where I struggle with that, and I know that if I just went in 100% I would lose the weight so fast...but that is not what I am trying to do. I am developing a healthy lifestyle. I am not dieting or following a strict plan. Which means my progress is going to take longer than expected. But that also means I'm making a lifestyle change and not a fast crash diet.

Take time today to think about how your body is a reflection of your lifestyle. In both personal care and health and wellness. Are you making healthier choices? Are you exercising often. Are you choosing to watch tv shows more than take care of you? Are you finding reasons why you can't take care of you? Do you spend a little bit of time just for you each day?

Next time you start to beat yourself up over your progress or just think you should be doing something faster than you are, sit back and thing about how far you have come. How much you have changed. Because that is what truly matters. That you are changing your old habits into new healthier ones. And that you remember how amazing you are. And darn it, go get a pedi and mani done, or get your hair cut, or a massage. Do something for you. Budget it into your finances so that there is no excuse why you can't take care of yourself. Schedule it into your calendar and don't cancel at the last moment. You matter. And honestly I have never felt so good both inside and outside because I am taking care of all of me. Not just some of me but all of me!

30 Days Of Healthy Recipes & Book Club

I might be late in figuring out what I wanted to do in my exclusive health and fitness support group but I finally figured it out! I personally am recycling recipes way too much in my house and need some new ones to try so...Each day in my exclusive group I'm posting a new healthy recipe. Yep, since weight loss comes mostly from what you are putting in your body, might as well make it tasty!

Just a little sneak peek, today's recipe is a healthier alternative option to Potato Soup. I love potato soup. Rich, creamy and way too starchy, but swap potatoes with Cauliflower and you have a veggie loaded non starchy and way less cream and dairy. You can view the whole recipe CAULIFLOWER SOUP RECIPE HERE.
